Vietnam

My best friend told me this story about his friends death during the battle of Hue.

During the Tet holiday the communists launched a surprise offensive and for a brief time held the city Hue.

My friends best combat buddy was a black man from Mo town Chicago. His name was Robin and he was nicknamed Wonder Boy.He was a big cool tough strong black dude and my friend who was white worshipped him. They were costant companions.

The American soldiers had not been trained for street fighting. They were trained to fight in the jungle.Suddenly they found themselves in a ferocious street fight with a well entrenched enemy.

I wasn't there but during a firefight Wonder Boy caught bullet through his chest. The bullet had gone in one side and out the other.

He was evacuated alive and after the battle my friend visited him at the hospital.Wonder boy told my friend "I got my million dollar wound" Gene.

While my friend was with him Pfc Robins eyes set and he died in the hospital bed.

My friend told this story often. He died of sleep apnea in August 2000.

I was born with asthma and I couldn't serve my country in the military.

I'm telling this story to honor my friend and his fallen buddy.May they both rest in peace.

Man, life in the 60's and 70's here in Michigan kinda revolved around the motor city and we all grew up listening to Motown records but I honestly never heard of Motown Chicago. Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter, I'm sorry to hear about Wonder boy just the same. I think during the Viet Nam war Chicago had the highest murder rate in the United States but I couldn't tell you for sure what color they all were.

That was a sad war, very unfair how soldiers were treated due to the political reasons, all they did was follow the orders of their country, same her for AU soldiers, bit like what is happening now and for what, they killed an Afgan woman for 'in their eyes' adultery....the men ofcourse go free, the woman was knelt in front of the villiage and shot with ak7's (I think) in front of them all, hailing it the right thing.
Shits me that after all this NOTHING really changes for the women there.
